Courses: Navy Olive Ochre

Planners Comments.
I hope you enjoyed night orienteering at Blackland Farm. It was satisfying to see 60 people turn up and take on the challenge of this 122 acre Guide campsite and activity centre at night. Initial impressions of the area (based purely on looking at the map) may be that orienteering there would be very straight forward. The darkness added another dimension, however, and the strong path network was not always easy to make out – “parallel terrain” errors were a frequent risk.
The weather conditions were pretty much ideal for night-O, with a crystal clear cold night and a little bit of a frozen crust on some of the muddy bits. There was no chance of being run over by 4x4 vehicles, shot by wayward archery arrows, or attacked from above by out of control zip wire passengers as these activities didn’t operate at night (unlike the following days event!) so we had the area to our selves. I felt that the area lent itself very well to night-O.
Blackland Farm has been a regular feature of the SO fixtures list for several years for our (normally) Saturday morning SOGallopen events. I tried to level the playing field for non-SO by ensuring that blank maps of the area were available to view for everyone prior to running their courses. I hope everyone found this fair and useful.
The longest (Navy) course was shorter than the guideline length as I felt that the area was physical enough to warrant it and I thought that twice round the area would be enough for most participants (three times, just to make up the length, would take some of the pleasure out of the challenge). Finish times on all three courses looked reasonable and within expected bounds. Congratulations to everyone for showing their competency at night. I feel that the recently launched Kent Night Cup (KNC) series of events has helped many people improve and gain confidence with night orienteering – it showed at Blackland Farm. There are moves afoot to have a KNC event at Blackland in 2008.
Thanks to Anna for organising the event, including arranging use of the hut for the weekend. Anna also ensured you parked your cars in the right place. Thanks to Jaquie for looking after the computing side of the electronic punching and producing the results (very quickly, after several hours in the freezing hut!).Thanks to Mike G for printing the maps in his normal highly efficient and effective manner. Thanks to Keith T, Ali W, Mike H for collecting controls. Thanks to Bridget for taking your money. Aside from these heroic SO helpers (familiar names? – less familiar names very welcome for subsequent events): thanks to Blackland Farm for allowing us to hold the event and you for all coming and making the event worthwhile.
