Planners’ comments
 Laura and I were constrained in our planning of this event with the Coates Castle area unavailable to us at this time. After our initial planning, the OOB area on Coates Common was extended and on Lord’s Piece, grazing cattle had obliterated some paths and a ‘mighty mower’ had very recently cut down a lot of scrubland, much improving runnability and visibility.
We wanted to take the technical courses to the more intricately contoured areas, offering route choice and keeping you thinking on the longer legs. We were able to get the orange, green and blue courses onto Coates Common to admire the pigs and enjoy the bracken and forest which provided a good contrast to the open areas on Lord’s Piece. To reduce the number of compulsory legs on the longer courses, we decided to offer you a choice of well publicised marked fence crossings (we even had a stile made for you to use) so ‘going straight’ should not have been an option. We added an additional taped leg to the yellow course on the day to get the younger members through the trampled area around the cattle fodder rack.
Judging from the favourable comments and post race analysis, I think we provided an appropriate challenge and an opportunity for some head to head racing. We watched with interest from our vantage point at the start.
It was the first time either of us had planned a SOG or used OCAD and it was a steep but enjoyable learning curve for us both. It was good to welcome newcomers to the sport and many of you took advantage of the fine weather to tackle Simon’s relocation training exercise.

We are very grateful to Sebastian Anstruther and the Barlavington Estate for allowing us to use the area and to Paul Crawley, the Farm Manager, for moving the cattle for us.
