Planner’s Comments
What a glorious winter’s day! And with the forest in such good condition I don’t think you could ask for better running conditions. I knew that there would be some fast times today and was worried that the courses were too short. However, looking at the results they were probably about right, although I think the Yellow could have been a bit longer.
Thank you for all of the positive comments; It was great to see so many orienteers enjoying themselves. And as for the turnout, well the results show over 130 runs! This is exceptional for this area and I can’t recall more than about 90 turning up to previous events here. Luckily I did print extra maps but we still ran out of Orange maps – apologies to those affected. If you had to give up your Orange map and would like another copy then send me a message via the club website and I will get one to you.
This event was set up at fairly short notice due to ongoing forestry work in Abbot’s Wood. However, with the visibility and runnability so good I had a big area to work with. I knew that controls would be highly visible so my plan was to have similar courses for Green and Blue but with very few common controls. I hoped that you might put each other off but I don’t think that happened much! I think the optimum routes for both courses were generally direct with the possible exceptions of leg 3 on Green and legs 5 & 12 on Blue. Leg 5 had a path option which I think fast runners would have preferred, whilst the good terrain runners would have found the direct approach better.
Congratulations go to Carlos for his first SOG win on Blue and to Nick, Dominic and Matthew for their wins on the other courses.
Big thanks go to Mike for map sales, Jaquie and Peter for computing, Les for permissions, Bob D, John F, John G and Brian R for collecting controls, and to everyone else who offered but were not needed.
I hope you will all return to Friston in April when we will be running on a Central Friston map with starts on the Eastern side of the forest. It is another largely runnable area with the potential for some interesting and quite challenging courses.
