Planner's comments
As my first attempt at planning in a woodland setting, Ditchling Common, with its extensive path network, was always going to be a challenge to fit in the length the differing courses required. This, the clearance of previously inaccessible areas and the removal of half the bracken in the main field just before Christmas are the things that, I believe, make planning interesting!
The heavy rain the night before the event made ponds appear in previously dry areas, streams became wider and the mud (for which Ditchling is infamous) even muddier. However, the rain held off on the day and at least some managed to finish with dry top halves.
Safety was my main concern and I must give my apologies to everyone on the blue course where the timed crossing did not function.
My very grateful thanks go to Les for updating the map and “walking the course” with me, Sue for her patience in checking the differing course versions and Jaquie and Peter for doing the technical bit and coping with the headache of the malfunctioning control. Also thanks to Mike and Tom who sorted out the car parking, a huge task when the turnout was so high. Claire for getting up at an unearthly hour and helping with the putting out of controls. The crossing marshals; Rob, David, Les, Mark, Chris and Ian and also to Jan and Penny for doing such a stirling job on map sales.
