 Rewell Woods are crossed by a couple of rights of way, but away from these some parts of the area have a real ‘lost world’ feel to them. We’d planned possible yellow and orange courses to the east of the access road, but had to scrap them when we visited the forest and found the mapped tracks and paths totally overgrown or gone altogether. I don’t think anyone had been in there since Roger did the map! So recourse was had to the much more junior-friendly paths along the top of the scarp, although vague junctions and fallen trees added to the challenge here, too. All this affected the position of the start, as I didn’t want the junior courses crossing the road, but once this was sorted out I could think again about the green and blue courses.
My original attempts at these had included one or two long route-choice legs, but I gave these up as they were likely to be little more than path or track runs. So, in the spirit of Kyloe Hills, or the world ranking event at the Scottish 6 Days, I decided instead to make the courses as technically challenging throughout as I could manage in a ‘soft southern’ forest. It seems almost everyone got caught out somewhere or other, and there were one or two remarks about misplaced controls, but others found them where they expected to. And the feedback was largely positive, the challenge having been, on the whole, enjoyed. On the day, the rain and gloom made reading the map much more difficult, those wearing spectacles suffering in particular, but for an event that clashed with the OMM the wind and rain seemed appropriate. Didn’t the waterproof maps stand up well?
Running these local events is far from being a one- or two-person affair, and Rewell Woods could not have taken place without the help of Mike (on maps), Les and Sylvia (on registration and map sales), Dave (on signs), John (on car parking) and Neil (on control collection). Their efficiency meant we could concentrate on getting 29 controls out on a morning when there was no usable light before 7 o’clock. Our considerable thanks go to them, and to those of you who shared your comments with us afterwards.
