What a lovely day, the second batch of control hanging on Saturday morning was certainly more pleasant than the first in Friday evening's monsoon!
I hope that the people found the Yellow and Orange to be the standard expected. For the more technical courses, I found it difficult to avoid both excessive path running and excessive climb. Stanmer has loads of paths which roughly follow the contours, and I didn't think you'd thank me for running you backwards and forwards across them as this would have meant bouncing up and down like a yo-yo.
Consequently I set a lot of short diagonal legs on the Green and Blue, which made them more like Middle Distance courses than the classic style. I even put in one leg which was more like a Sprint course, where those people who looked at the whole leg and decided not to attempt to run through the hedge were duly rewarded. Possibly this was a little unfair on a map on which a lot of the darker green was actually quite passable; my apologies if you felt victimised for trying to go straight.
While the map has had minor updates, the last comprehensive review was some years ago. The rotting of dead timber has converted some, but not all, of the rootstocks into knolls, and makes it very hard to find either a knoll or a rootstock control site which is fair as mapped. On the other hand, the large number of unmapped changes to small paths made some of the navigation more challenging than it would have been otherwise.
I wonder about removing the smaller paths from the map altogether for the Blue course at a future SOG? This would arguably be fairer than a map with out-of-date paths, and would certainly make planning a technical course easier. Conversely, it could be said to introduce a bingo element, as some routes would find paths and some wouldn't. One for the committee to ponder?
