Courses: Sprint-O Orange Yellow White

PLANNER'S REPORT
This is a very problematic area to plan on. At first glance it looks ideal terrain for sprint/park orienteering. The map shows four clusters of buildings sharing open and many-featured playing fields, even two small patches of woodland. Unfortunately life is not so simple.
The area is split between three bodies for land management thus complicating land permission. Two of the schools (Varndean School in the east and Balfour Junior in the south) are fortresses behind high railings and locked gates; there was never any possibility of visiting their buildings.
The main headache was Varndean College in the north. Perhaps because of the school holidays, it was some weeks before Rob managed to finalise permission to use the area. This was achieved just thirteen days before the maps had to be printed and excluded running between the buildings - a severe restriction for the more technical courses. The caretaker lives on site and the college is covered by CCTV so, other considerations apart, I could not sneak the odd leg through! So, after revising the white and yellow courses to take account of this, I was now in a position to plan orange and sprint on the small part of the map remaining.
By the way, I love Dorothy Stringer, the only school with no locked gates that gave us carte blanche to go anywhere. Luckily this is the most interesting part of the map.
I was not out of the woods yet. Some of you who ran last year may have noticed that the fencing around Balfour has been extended. The map had to be updated. I carefully paced the new fencing and took a few bearings with a sighting compass as a double-check. Back home, I pencilled the changes onto a map and found that the bearings just didn't work. An hour later I'd given up trying to fathom out why. Back on site two days later I found that there's a magnetic deflection at the fence producing readings up to 96 degrees awry. A few paces from the fence the compass worked perfectly. I'm still scratching my head over this. Hopefully no-one was affected.
Map updated, courses planned, I was making a final site visit when I came across football practise and discovered that our event coincided with the start of youth football matches. More out-of-bounds overprint was hastily added to the maps to stop you joining the games.
Given the short time-scale for planning and the problems encountered, I was pleased that most of you seemed to enjoy the courses. The white was kept to line features on the playing fields. Yellow went through the school for a short stretch to give you a taste of sprint orienteering. Orange visited the buildings and some far-flung corners of the fields to give you an overview of the area. Sprint used two maps because of the need to revisit the one available set of buildings. I tried not to include too much dead running, though there were some moans about the long, uphill leg on sprint!
Thanks go to the gallant helpers (Tim, Karen and Jack Ashworth, David and Penny Marsh, Jane Lambert, Jaquie, and others who volunteered on the day). Without you the event would not have happened. Particular thanks go to Tim for supporting me through the many stressful moments before the event.
One further observation: the maps you ran with were noticeably less clear and well defined than the maps I planned on. I believe this is a known issue with the club printer. I hope no-one was too optically challenged.
