Planner's comments
Thank you all for participating on such a great day.. Having competed a couple of times, and really enjoyed the Sprint O's over the last few years at Horsham, and living fairly locally I thought it was about time I stuck my hand up and took my turn at planning the courses.
With effective use of a couple of visits (including whizzing about on the mountain bike), and a couple of concerted evenings tweaking courses on the computer I was in a position to submit courses.
From review of the sprint series planning guide (from Rob Lines) it was clear we wanted to attract people into our wonderful sport, so the start and finish were selected to be in an area that would attract casual interest. Also club presence at the Park festival, (co-incidentally only a few yards away) the week before hopefully attracted a few people back- it was good to see a
The white and yellow courses were planned to strict guidelines with the intention of providing children a stimulating but low risk challenge.
For the orange and in particular the sprint we had the opportunity to go a bit further afield, and my intention was to provide some variable length legs and some short sharp changes of direction, with opportunities for route choice where possible. I wanted to keep you out of the car parks and avoid people running though the (out of bounds anyway) maze area. Knowing we would have to use areas of the park more than once I wanted to try to avoid you running the same areas in the same direction. For the sprint course I started you off through the hedge and through some short legs where hopefully you needed to pay attention to the map without giving you a huge chance to plan ahead for these or other legs. I later routed you through some of the rougher areas of grass to tempt you with through or round decisions.
Following submission of the courses I needed to make some changes to avoid the temptation of a hole in the hedge in what I assume to be an old putting green / crazy golf area, and to avoid the football training that would be there on the day (when checking the site I was pleased to see all football pitches were no longer marked on the ground - but hadn't banked on footballers training through the summer...). This got rid of a nice long leg with some good route choice options, so instead you had a long run south, hopefully testing your lungs, before throwing you into some short sharp legs to the finish.
After the maps were printed we also discovered that the old nursery was being demolished, this again took away an element of route choice, and was a principal reason for the start line safety briefing...
I hope you enjoyed the fast courses on a fantastic day. I certainly enjoyed planning and putting out the controls on a beautiful morning, and it was great to see so many participants- there were always at least a couple of people waiting to start the sprint course between 10 and 11, and I tried my best to minimise your wait time. Many thanks to all of the helpers who helped share the load - Rob, Jim, Barry, Penny, Julia, Tom, John, Anna and Jacquie and anyone else I have forgotten to mention (what is apparent is that people will just help and do jobs often without even being asked, and this was very much appreciated).
