Courses: Sprint-O Orange Yellow White

Planner's comments
The first Sprint race of the summer was, happily, blessed by summer weather rather than a tropical heatwave. In fact, after standing at the start for an hour in the shade of the trees, I was actually starting to feel a bit chilly.
I can’t find any formal guidelines for Sprint races, but to my mind it’s short, sharp legs with changes of direction and lots of route decisions to be made at high speed without too much trouble actually finding the controls. Preston Park proved to be well suited to this style of orienteering.
The plan was to keep you off the large grassy areas either side of the start/finish area as these are very heavily used for football coaching, circuit training and other activities. I also saw little point in using the far sides of the cycle track as this would just have been dead running.
The White course was a very straightforward, natural route which avoided crossing any of the park roads. Yellow used the same course with extensions at top and bottom. Orange competitors saw virtually all parts of the park apart from venturing into the rose garden.
Ah, the rose garden! I didn’t compete in this event last year, but I was aware of the problem: whether jumping over the out-of-bounds flower beds was fair or not.
I honestly tried my best to make Sprint course competitors aware that crossing the flower beds in any way, including jumping even if there were no flowers, was prohibited. The fail-safe was, I thought, the instruction “Do not cross flower beds” in the control descriptions. The whole point of that section was negated if that rule was disobeyed. My apologies to those to whom I failed to get the message across, and credit to those who owned up! As OCAD shows the shortest route for both legs (to 107 and 131) to be 70m each, my all-seeing spy (aka Splitsbrowser) will be most interesting.
I understand that the rose garden made most competitors stop and think – which was what was intended – and I hope you enjoyed “solving the maze”. Apologies to those who misread the map in the area and headed for 106 rather than 131, but I tried to show the courses as clearly as I could.
I hope the hollow tree (102) provided a moment of enjoyment too, as well as perhaps the stepping stones for the younger competitors.
I won’t name all those who assisted as I am afraid of omitting someone (as I have done in the past), but I do thank you all.
Finally, one sour note. Please, please, DO NOT offer help on the course to those who do not seek it. My wife wants to do the best SHE can when running a course, and neither seeks nor wants assistance. It really defeats the object of the whole exercise when someone tells her where a control is, as happened today on the very first control of the Sprint course, thereby ruining, in her mind, the rest of her run as a fair, competitive event. If you want to know how angry she was, then reading the article she wrote for the recent Southdowner (“A Point of View”, page 17) might give you a clue. And a seething wife is something to be feared!
