Courses: Blue Green Orange Yellow

Planner’s Review
Let me start by thanking all the people who said kind things about my first attempt at planning for a quarter of a century.
Second, let me congratulate all those who had the sense to retire when the heat got too much for them. It takes a particular kind of courage to do that, especially when competing amongst people you know.
Thirdly let me apologise for the somewhat pared-down nature of the Start layout and organisation; it wasn’t until 10:00 on the day that I understood that that was my responsibility. Thanks to you all for your understanding, and thanks especially to Vince Joyce for helping me out at no notice whatsoever.
Once I knew that the Warren had been selected for the Club Handicap, I went for a stroll around. I was struck by the sheer variety of vegetation and terrain types, by the complexity of the path network, by the accessibility of the off-path areas, and – of course - by the stunning views. All packed into a very, very, small area.
Far too small, really… Early ideas of loops circling away from, and climaxing on, the viewpoint on the central ridge were abandoned when I considered:-
(i) how short the average leg would be, and therefore how many would be needed to make up courses distances for Green and Blue;
(ii) how difficult it would be to avoid long stretches of path running – a more experienced planner might have had less of a problem with that;
(iii) how difficult it would be to give separate, personal, challenges to Blue and Green competitors – I don’t like cross-county processions;
(iv) what a pleasant Start and Finish area we had available just inside the main gate, with the right amount of shade and privacy, with gorgeous views of pines, heather and birches, and with enough nearby map features to allow varied and interesting (I hope…) approaches to the finish.
So, I apologise to all those disappointed by the lack of loops; instead you had, as Ali Hooper remarked, figures crossing the landscape in all directions. A premeditated distraction; a designed confusion; an enhanced need for concentration and self-reliance. I’d be interested to hear your views on that…
I’m indebted to Neil Crickmore, my Controller, for cleaning up my Blue & Green courses. I’d looked at the spaghetti of intersecting course legs on the map and decided that I needed three part-maps for Green and four for Blue (you would have liked that, in that heat…); Neil did a little prestidigitation and - lo! – you could see what was what on just two part-maps. Neil also eased the technical difficulty of my Yellow and Orange courses; I first orienteered as an M35, and don’t have a Junior’s eye view.
Neil’s idiot’s guide to OCAD was also invaluable, as I scrambled up that part of the learning curve.
I’d like to thank Jaquie Drake for her handicapping, and to compliment her on its accuracy. The scatter of early arrivals each had a story of adversity or error; the successful completers, when they eventually came, arrived in a rush (as Jacquie intended), and from all directions of the compass (as I intended). And Jacquie, thanks again for the fast, reliable, registration and download systems on which our events rely.
I’d also like to thank Ali Hooper who, on a day when she had far more important things on her mind, organised the car parking and the taping of a slightly longer and less obvious route to the competition area. I chose this because I thought it would allow a more relaxed approach, and return, than is allowed by a narrow footpath along a busy road with fast traffic. (Did it make a difference?)
And thank you, also, to all those who helped Ali, and Jaquie, and me!
I relied, totally, on Mike Gammon’s map production. I hope he’ll take my casual assumption that he’d do a flawless job as a profound compliment. Mike spotted my one “deliberate” error, and produced a quality product with no fuss whatsoever, in a very short time, even though it involved back-printing, and two sets of control descriptions – which I just assumed he’d cope with...
I’d be interested in feedback on the double set of descriptions. The small size of the mapped area gave me the opportunity; exploratory dabbling with OCAD gave me the idea. My thought was that, if we set out both text and symbolic descriptions side by side, it would provide a relatively painless way of helping the less experienced graduate from text to symbolic.
You didn’t get control description lists because, again, I wasn’t clear who was supposed to be doing what. Mea culpa! Did not having extra control descriptions matter to you? (I personally prefer them as I don’t have to unfold the map…)
Control 91: there was comment… Yes, it’s a small depression, and yes, the birch scrub is invading up the slope (the map background should perhaps show scattered trees?) but, even so… It’s accurately positioned on the map, hung visibly, and reachable by compass and pacing from any of: (i) the knoll on the ridge, (ii) the nearby platform, and (iii) the path junction below. And it’s the kind of control that redresses the balance away from those who think slower than they run and towards those who run slower than they think. Personal bias showing here…
On the map itself… I could (now, after much exploration) suggest a couple of minor amendments but those apart, I think Ed Nicholls did an excellent job with the map revision, allowing me to take you to places where, in Roger Maher’s words “only mappers go”.
There were times, during the build-up to this event when, with work and domestic deadlines arriving like storm waves crashing on the beach, I felt oppressed and exhausted. However, walking the deserted, dawn-lit area on Saturday morning while setting out the controls, everything seemed wonderful. True, the subsequent “Start, what Start?” moment was a bit of a downer but thereafter the eager expressions of the outbound starters and the smiling, if sweat-stained, faces of the inbound finishers made it all absolutely worthwhile.
Thanks for the opportunity!
John Morris, 6th June 2010
