“It’s just another Green SOG”, said my controller and mentor, Steve Jarvis, about my first ever venture into O-planning. From this challenging comment was born the idea of using the Borde Hill Parkland for the two loop SCORE event, with the additional challenge of a map change at a moment of your choosing. From a planning point of view, I wanted to try to create route choice dilemmas for you right from the start by tempting you (on both maps) with approximately equidistant controls whether you headed clockwise or anti-clockwise. Judging by the differing starting routes taken this seemed to work. The side effect was that there should less “tailing” in the main parkland. The vegetation changed a lot around Borde Hill and some my initial control positions had to be rejected due to excess nettle and undergrowth. I left a few controls in amongst the copses and the routing between 83 and 85 was designed to tempt the brave (although I was convinced it faster round the outside), the narrow ride 73/75 is probably a bit optimistic bit of mapping and something we’ll need to look at. Finally I will confess that control 69 was probably a little mis-positioned to the east on the map, the control description clearly stated stream bend N side and therefore I have only limited sympathy for those that looked on the S bank.
As to the weather, that was out of my control and not forecast. It did probably affect the evening due to the need for map bags and the frustration of using vital seconds while trying to cram a flimsy map into a damp case. From most of the comments I got it seemed that people enjoyed the novelty of the format which I thought fit the context of a low key mid-summer event.
I should finally like to thank all those who helped on the day and in advance: Jan for taking entries and collecting controls, Claire for sorting the car parking, Les for helping me with the control collections while it rained, Jaquie and Peter for manning the IT /results and helping me work out how to tie OCAD/Map/Vugglesoftware together, Mike for producing the maps, Steve for some wise counsel on control location and description, and of course the Borde Hill estate for letting us use this parkland.
