Courses: Brown Blue Green Light Green Orange Yellow White

PLANNER'S COMMENTS;
What a glorious Spring Day, sunshine, spring flowers, fantastic views, etc.,
It is always an added challenge planning on a brand new area. How will it run? Will it be technical enough for the experienced orienteers? As it turned out it ran very fast, especially the longer courses despite the cruel scarp slope. Quite a few people said that they had been caught out or made a few simple errors – so it wasn’t too straightforward.
The main problem with Clapham (and the planning challenge) is the arrangement of smallish blocks of well managed woods separated by grazing land, all separated by some serious fencing. Also there are some large blocks of pheasant pens that are generally unusable. This didn’t leave too much wood to run through – hence the helical nature of the longer courses.
I only heard favourable comments at the finish, which was very nice. But I also saw a lot of ‘newer’ orienteers particularly youngsters which was even more rewarding. We ran out of Orange maps, which is also a very good sign for the future of the club.
Thanks to ALL my helpers (all the usual suspects) – especially Ed who put out and collected in – and to Peter for his relaxed but efficient controlling which I am sure helped to make the courses that bit better.
See you all at the Parham SOG next month,
Kieran

Controller's Report
This was a rare event in our part of the country: an event on an area completely new to orienteering. The drive south along the A280 has always been one of my favourite routes through the S Downs, and has some dramatic views – it was a pleasure to be involved with an orienteering event in this area.
Planner Kieran confidently approached his task with enthusiasm and produced eight suitable courses. The terrain of the area was generally very pleasant to be in, although it was extensively enclosed by fences, all of which had teeth (either barbed or electric)! This made planning a little tricky and a few people had difficulties out on their courses (though most I spoke to had no problems). The arrival of livestock in the field just north of the start was quite late and it would’ve been difficult to plan round at that stage. I had one report that this caused difficulty to a competitor. On balance, I feel that Kieran made a good job of the courses and his execution of the task caused me very little trouble. Kieran is one of the clubs more prolific planners, and this experience showed.
All courses were within acceptable limits for the finishing times for the competitors, although the perfect winter running conditions made the area much drier than expected and running speeds were generally higher than expected, thus brown, green and white would’ve benefitted from being a little longer. Blue, light green and yellow were spot on. There were no competitors on red. Conversely: Orange appeared to be slightly on the long side (possibly due to a significant number of people new to the course?).
John, our organiser, was the main driver behind the event (some of which – the string course – was literally in his back yard!) and treated us to a very comprehensively organised orienteering event. John’s attention to detail could not be faulted, and he had all possible eventualities covered. From my perspective, the event ran extremely smoothly and no real hitches were apparent to the participants. Amazingly, for such a competent organiser, this was the first SO event that John has organized, so he had much to find out about how things worked specifically within the club. John was very generous to share his birthday celebration with members of the club who attended – a memorable day for John and us all – Thanks John!
I’d like to make special mention of the string course: planned; mapped; and organised by Les Coles. John had identified his garden and some adjacent properties as a suitable location and Les implemented a fun course that wound it’s way round this delightful area. Great work Les!
John managed to forge important links with landowners, farmers, and others to earn us all the opportunity to run in Clapham Woods on this occasion. The hope is that SO will be able to use the area again in the future – there is scope for lots of enjoyable orienteering on this gem of an area, and significant parts are still to be used for the first time.
Peter Chapman

Organiser’s Remarks
A delightful area (I knew about that), an excellent team (I relied on them) and cloudless blue skies (aren’t they always in February?) combined to give us a very sound base for a successful event. And it certainly helps to have a calm, experienced Controller and a painstaking Planner.
Overall things went as I intended – just about. I apologise for the late-opening gate (a communications glitch); I’ve learned that a taped route (returning across the paddock) is invisible with a strong sun behind it. Another time, I’ll advertise peripheral attractions rather more effectively. And if the cows, and their electric fence, surprised you – they surprised us too, and perhaps serve to remind us all how lucky we are to be given freedom to roam as we will in a busy working estate.
If there are other things you think I could have organised better, please let me know – life without learning is very dull…
We have an annual window of opportunity for this estate, in the slack time between the close of the shooting season and the start of pheasant-rearing. So we look forward to seeing you next Spring, hopefully for a couple of events. And don’t keep it a secret; if you enjoyed Clapham Woods, tell your friends…
In a small community, everything is seen and remembered. So I’m happy to be able to report that the interest and reactions from the village have been uniformly positive – thank you all for being such well-mannered guests.
John Morris
