Planner's Comments
Stoughton really does seem like the back of beyond and I had a series of lovely days, sharing it with many deer, butterflies, pheasants, various invertebrates and mountain bikers. It is a real patchwork of forest, with different tree types and varying degrees of vegetation, especially the yew trees with their unforgiving low branches. I really did try very hard to keep you out of the worst of the vegetation, but there was no way to avoid it altogether and I also had to manage the amount of climb to make sure that did not become too much. It certainly doesn’t count as a ‘Softie Southern Forest’
I had a lot of help from the family: with Bryony helping me plan and tape control sites, Jonathan test running the black (and saving you all from a very prickly last control), putting out boxes and collecting and Neil doing his usual magic on the computer to produce the final map versions and do the final technical wizardry and putting out and collecting.
The main constraint on planning was the position of the car park. Inholme Wood which is the section next to the car park, was basically covered in really, really thick bramble, so it only took a brief look to realise that most courses should not go there. I considered many logistical options, but in the end decided that 2 starts and a communal finish was the best arrangement, both for the courses and for people trying to co-ordinate split starts. I managed to plan a White and Yellow from the close start, but despite several attempts I was not able to plan an Orange course from there, because of the limited path network and thick vegetation. Many thanks to Ed Cox, who cleared vegetation from some of the rides on the White and Yellow course to make those passable.
I am very grateful to Dave for his calm, efficient organising and to Mike for stepping in at a fairly late stage to control the even and of course to all those who helped collect controls: Sylvia, Matthew, Ian, Ruth, Robin and Kenny, enabling us to leave at just after 4pm with everything sorted out.

Organiser's Comments
The air strip used for car parking is in regular use for both commercial and leisure purposes. Its not often that, following request for access prior to the event, that permission is given with the proviso of looking out for aircraft coming in which they did on two visits that were made. Inholmes Wood, which wasn't used as much as was hoped, is partly owned by the farmer and it was by his request that the route to the far start skirted the woods to the north and kept to the sides of his fields. This was all about returning the forest back to nature and not disturbing deer habitats prior to the annual cull (or something like that).
The mountain bike track, if you saw it, was a well constructed downhill route. The builder was spotted during the event and the opportunity taken to question him about it. The FC are now aware of the track and he is to form a club and control the use of the track. Food for thought if you are into such things.
