Planners Report This is the first time I have planned a Regional Event. From the start I was keen to keep as much as possible with in Broadstone Warren, as I believed this is the best part of the area. This meant parking within the forest or along walk to the start, opting to park within the forest we where able to keep, start, finish and Assemble close together. Unfortunately the track into the forest degenerated over the last few months. Les and Bridget Hooper spent many hours the week before putting gravel into the ruts but, heavy rain on the Friday washed away some of the gravel. The courses did not change much from the ones I first planned in August. I tried to stop path running and in doing so may have restricted route choice but, I believe that on most courses the many changes in direction meant the brain needed to be switched on. My job was made easy by Bridget Hooper’s fantastic organisation. She dealt with any problem that arose in a quick and positive manner and with her many volunteers on the day; I was left with nothing to do. Ed Cox |
Organiser's Comments
We hope you all enjoyed orienteering in this lovely part of Sussex. It was always planned to have the car parking in the forest close to assembly, the start and the finish. We knew the parking would be a bit of a challenge but, until about 10 days ago, the access track provided no problem. However, with the prolonged wet weather and some heavy vehicular traffic, it became apparent that one particular section of the track needed attention. We dumped about 18 sacks of stone and restricted you to a narrow route through the middle, which worked…. Phew…. My apologies for all those cars that now need cleaning. The Broadstone Warren Scout Camp Centre Manager made my job much easier by allowing us use of the toilet block and letting us do much of the preparation on Saturday afternoon. In the event the weather was much better than forecast, the SO team swung into action, you all came and went and the event was over before we knew it. I could not believe how quickly everything was cleared away at the end of the event thanks to so many willing hands. pecial thanks go to Ed Cox for planning some excellent courses and having the same “belt and braces” philosophy as me, to Mike Elliot for his relaxed controlling with valuable suggestions, to the Broadstone Warren Scout Camp, the Ashdown Conservators and, of course, to all the fantastic SO helpers.
